Union Pacific's Provo Switcher crosses Pleasant Grove's Mainstreet on the UP Provo Industrial Lead,This line was once Union Pacific's Provo-Salt Lake City Mainline prior to 1985. In November of that year,Union Pacific gained trackage rights on the Rio Grande Mainline to the west and moved all it's Provo-Salt Lake City Traffic. However the line was used for occassional detours until the early 1990's when the Rio Grande would close it's own mainline for work windows. |

This line was discontinued in 1985 as a through route when UP moved it's traffic between Provo and Salt Lake City onto the parallel Rio Grande Mainline to the west. |

Lets travel back in time to 1997 before UP bought their brand new SD70M's and renumbered former Southern Pacific Tunnel Motors. Here we find UP 4555 leading the Las Vegas-Ogden Manifest. 4555 is actually former SP 8291 and I must admit that it looks better in yellow paint. This 91 car train came through Provo from Lynndyl and is bound for Ogden. UP sold or scrapped these classic locomotives earlier this year,The track that UP 4555 and two SD40-2's has since been torn out and removed to make way for the Utah Transit Authority's front runner project. |
